Formal Proposal for Documentary

The overall topic of our documentary Can you see me now? Is senses, however this will be explored as a series documentary rather than a one off program; we intend to make the first five minutes of the first documentary focusing of eyesight.

The style of our documentary we all agreed should be informal and relaxed while still trying to keep it interesting and informative. We also want our documentary to be very bright when considering the lighting and the overall feel of the documentary should be as fun as we can make it without making it look childish.

Our documentary will be a mixed documentary as we believe that these are the more successful type. It will contain interviews and vox pops with both the general public and professionals, it will also have a narrator in order to anchor the overall documentary, as well as cutaways to dramatise and support points that are being made and the facts that are being given. It will not consist of reconstructions as for our topic we think it would be somewhat difficult and confusing to find something to simply reconstruct.

After looking over our audience research we found that most people that were questioned watched channel four of an evening we therefore intend to show our documentary on channel four after the water shed, between the new series of wedding house and Ramsay’s best restaurant we have chosen to place it here for two reasons the first, as it is hammocked between the two programs in order to inherit the viewers from wedding house and pre echo the viewers of Ramsay's best restaurant; the second is that both programs in one way or another involve senses so it will in someway seem coherent form one to another. The age of our target audience is aged 17plus.

This will be gathered though vox pops with the general public, the questions will be simple and quick but should give an insight into the way people see things. We shall also gather information though formal interviews with guide dogs for the blind, a qualified optician and people suffering with a loss of sight as this will give three separate insights into the effects eye sight has on people and there lives; another thing that we have done in order to gather information was the questionnaire we created and then handed out, as this has enabled us to see our target audience as well as the scheduling and much more. However for our secondary research we are going to rely heavily upon the use of the Internet to gather the facts we need and to also find images and archive footage that can then be used as cutaways. We are also going to use the Internet to gather our music as well as contact numbers in order to arrange the interviews themselves. I think for the most part our secondary research will have more of a role to play in the actual documentary whilst the primary research has played a more physical role in terms of viewing.

At the beginning of our documentary we are going to begin with the opening title sequence that will last around 5seconds long so that it fulfils its purpose but doesn’t take up to much time, there first five minuets will also contain interviews and voxs pops with not only the general public but also a spec savers optician and a member of staff from guide dogs for the blind, along with a person who has had laser eye surgery, as this will give us variety and a lot to work with. We are also going to use cutaways and give information on the history of glasses and the individuals involved. In the middle of the documentary we are going to explore the idea of behind designer glasses, we will use archive footage from runway shows and also show advertising campaigns along with an interview with a sales representative; we also want to give further information on the history of glasses and use book passages and photographs of those involved0. For the end of our documentary we are going to look into past of glasses and the iconic people that have worn glasses for example dame Edna and Elton john as this will give a different spin to the documentary, this will be supported through archive footage from music videos TV appearances and other forms of footage.

We would like to start our documentary with the opening title sequence this will be constructed from the arms of glasses that are bright colours this will be repeated and layered over each other to almost make the images look like strobe lights and we will then have eyes moving around the screen and then looking dead centre and revelling a sign over her mouth saying can you see me yet. While this is happening we are going to attempt to use an instrumental version of 30seconds to mars-search and destroy as we really like the music of the chorus. We are then going to look into using a montage of shots concerning glasses, lenses, opticians and other things to do with eyesight as well as a voice over giving information and opening up the overall documentary. we would like to use music that is quick passed and quirky in order to introduce fun into the piece and by using an instrumental it would make the music more relevant and accessible; we also decided that the main thing we wanted was a bright documentary full of colour so we would therefore try to introduce this in the title sequence and the start of the documentary. The cutaways from the general public will be as coherent to the documentary as possible; we would like little ones that are relaxed and ones that help to outline the points we have to make but we would also like cutaways that add a little humour as well as serious issues and answers too. The vox pops will be informative but still very relaxed and will link in with what is happening on screen I personally think the idea of layering vox pops with still images or archive footage would work quite nicely however this would only be finalised during the editing as it would depend on what it looks like and the vox pops would work best if they are kept simple. The interviews will consist of those with a member of the guide dogs team, a fully qualified optician from spec savers and also a person who has had laser eye surgery as well as a surgeon to give separate and contrasting views on the subject as well as introduce conflict. The music as we have already said we think should be instrumental in parts as this will enhance the documentary as it will allow us to add a voice over to certain parts; however we also felt that full songs should be used to give an atmosphere. We have considered hurts-illuminated for the full song and 30seconds to mars-search and destroy chorus for the instrumental as well as any of the songs we can find from free play music online for instrumental music. We think it would be really difficult to find a way to reconstruct anything when concerning our topic, but we do like the idea of archive footage from things like book passages, maps and photographs as well as adverts.

For our documentary we will need many resources, these will consist of Glasses, contact lenses when considering props. We will also use archive footage of spec savers or other optician adverts as well as photographs with people in glasses from different times in history to show progression through fashion. We will also looking into using the Internet for the majority of our research when writing questions and also looking for facts in order to write the narration script. Another resource we want to use is instrumental music and full songs to enhance and dramatise the actions within the frame.
