Filming & Editing Diary

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Filming at Spec Savers
These are images from our group filming in Specsavers on 14th October where we got an interview from Mr Jones who is an Optician who works at Spec Savers.

We also filmed around Spec Savers so we could get cutaways, as you can see in the images we got close ups of glasses and shots of the opticians as well.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vox Pops at Golden Square

These images were taken in Golden Square where we were filming Vox Pops for our Documentary. We filmed near Vision Express within Golden Square to make sure that our Mise-en-Scene kept with the theme of our Documentary. This was on October 21st.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Interview with Sue Jones

This is an Interview with Sue Jones and was done on October 26th and was in her home so that she felt more comfortable while we asked her questions. We also got some cutaways shots of her guide dog and Sue with her guide dog.

Editing

Logging and Capturing

These images show us starting to capture our recorded interviews and cutaways. Once we captured the tapes we started to log them on a logging sheet to record what we had film and how long each shot was. November 2nd.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Monday 8th November 2010"

On this day we starting cutting and editing our opening title sequence, Do do this we had to capture the sections of the tapes that had the shots that where going to making our titles. Once we had them we had to cut them so we could put them in the order we wanted. Once we did that we started to look at opacity to give a little effects to our opening titles, but we are going to go into more detail with that once we have completely got all the cutaways and interviews chopped up and ready to put in the running order we have set up.

"Tuesday 9th November 2010"

Started to drag down Vox Pops to the timeline from the source tabs, Once the Vox Pop were on the timeline, we would use the razor tool to chop up the Vox Pops, we had to use this tool so we could take out the questions be asked to the person in the vox pop so that the interviewee could just answer the question within her answer. once we cut them up we just clump them together so we now where they are and will be able t pick them out once we start to put the shots in the right running order. We also cut the Interview with the optician so we had that ready to put in order as well.

"Wednesday 10th November 2010"

On this we pulled two interviews that needed to be cut up, once they were on the timeline we again used the razor tool to cut out irrelevant answers in the interview and the questions being asked to the interviewee because the interviewee has to asked the question within their answer since that is the codes and conventions of a documentary. The two interviews that were edited today was Eileen Leatherbarrow interview about her eye health and Daniel Boardman's interview about being a contact lens wearer. Once they were cut up we kept the interviews near each other ready for us to move them in the right running order.

We also was able to edit some cutaways, the only reason we did the editing of the cutaways is because one of our tape captures is not working so we can't edit our other interviews until we resolve this problem. So not to waste any time we starting using the razor tool to cut and get the right cutaways shot for our Contacts lens interview. Also messed a bit with the speed duration on one of the contact lens cutaways to see if it would look good or not, but will be discussed while editing. Again we have kept the contact lenses cutaways clumped together until we are ready to put them in order.

Monday 15th November 2010

We worked with music today, we brought in a pen drive that has a range of music on it, so we chose the one we wanted which was "30 seconds to Mars - Search and Destroy". We imported that into premiere and then we cut the section that we wanted. Then we tried to remove the lyrics in the song so that it would just be the instrumentals playing. So we had to mess out with the song for a bit and we ended up opening it with Adobe Sound Booth and tried to edit the song there. But that was a complete failure so we left the music for now and are going to figure out how to sort the music out another time.

Once we decided to leave the music for the documentary we moved on to getting what footage we have cut and edited in the right order and we referred to our running order to help us with this. Since our running order has changed a bit since we didn't get an interview with the laser eye surgeon we all agreed what other interviews could fit in and fill that space.

Before we finished for the day we looked at one of the interviews which was the optician interview and started cutting that again to take out any bloopers and unnecessary things that aren't needed in the documentary and can give us more time to use in the running order.

Tuesday 16th November 2010

So on this date we had to sort out the red screen problem for one of our tapes. So to resolve this problem we just captured our taped again which took a lot of our time up so this day was partially wasted.
So while we waited for the tape to capture two of us from the group looked at what music we could use that we had for our documentary from a portable music device.

So once the tape finally captured we had enough time to do some more editing so we cut up more vox pops and where putting the shots together referring back to our running order as well so that we put them in the right place for the documentary.

Wednesday 17th November 2010

We started to work on the graphics of the opening title today, so we wanted our title to go over our shot of the close up of the girls eyes saying "Can you see me Now". So we had to add text and a box would pop up and we would choose the frame we would want the text to go over which would be the shot with the girls eyes. We decided that we wanted plain white text. Then we has a little dispute on where we should have the text because first we wanted it on her mouth. However it looked to abstract and random. So we decided to put it in her eyes. We also decided on the font to look like a type writer text which looks good. We did have some complications with putting the text in the eyes because we only used one text box, so we had to split the title to two text boxes and then had to transform the size and the rotation. Then finally we had it perfect but we had to have the close-up of the eyes to be still, so we made the point of the footage of the eyes into a JPEG image and attached that near the footage to make the sequence look like it freezes. We then decided we wanted the text to fade into the eyes. So we played about with the opacity. So we had to work with the timeline of the opacity settings and we then mark zero opacity and then three quarters into that shot we had the opacity go into 100%, that gave the effect of the title fading in.

After we did the opening titles we carried on putting are footage that we had in the right order so that we had some more of our documentary complete. So the footage you see above in the image is the vox pops and we had to again use the razor tool to cut the answers we wanted to use at the certain points where it seems relevant. Since so of the interviewees in the vox pops didn't necessarily say the question in the answer we had to work around that by finding someone we filmed who did and put that one in front so viewers would understand what the questions so they can understand the answer.
As soon as we done the first liitle snippets of vox pops in the right order we then looked at our running order that said we needed our Optician interview next. So we took the relevant answers we wanted to use and started to put them in the order we felt worked best. Plus putting relevant cutaways in the video 2 timeline which is on top of the interview timeline. Then we put more vox pop snippetes after that and started putting the interview with Eileen Leatherbarrow who talks about her eye health over the years. When we looked back at our timeline we realised that we were almost over our five minutes. this caused a bit of stress and panic because we have five interviews that need to be in the documentary. So we were stuck on what to do for that moment, but we decided just to follow the running order until we got all oour footage in the places that are sprcified in the running order. We knew that there would be a lot of sacrifices to the interview footages because we have already taken a chunk out of the optician interview. But we did decide to make sure we got the most important and relevant parts of the interviews in, even if the interview turns out to be quite quick.

Thursday 18th November 2010
Today carried on with putting the interview footage insince we just finished cutting the Eileen interview. Thats when we started working on the interview with Sue who has had laser eye surgery. Since her interview was kind of long we had to cut away the parts that we didn't need, we just needed the parts like how the procedure was when she went for the surgeory and why she got it done.
However when we were cutting Sue's interview we had to use the blue screen since that is the background we used for her interview. So first of all we had to get an image that was relevant to sight as well as the laser eye surgery. So the image ended up being an eye getting the laser on the eye. But I had to activate the blue screen for the interviewee to appear in front of the image so I started by putting the image in the video 1 timeline and putting the sue interview on the video 2 timeline. Then I clicked keying that is on the effects tab, then dragged the blue screen key onto the Sue interview footage. Then I find the video effects on that video and look for the blue screen key I have added to the footage and then started sorting the settings out so she looks like she is sitting in front of the image. But to make sure the Blue screen key looked clean i put two of them on the footage and set the first blue screen key's 'Threshold' to 36.0% and its 'Cutoff' to 33.0%. On the second added blue screen key I set the 'Threshold' to 100.0% and the 'Cutoff' to 82.0% and now the blue screen has been used and to me it looks really good

So while while we were carrying on with the editing I decided to get archive images together so that we could use for our documentary. Since I did this on a different computer I had to save the songs into my Pen drive so that I could transfer them into the computer we were using to do our editing for our film.
So once the image were on my pen drive I went back and started to work with my group with the editing again and then we started editing the interview with Sue Jones who is our blind interviewee. The reason this wasn't already cut is because this footage was on the tape that we were having problems with capturing. So cutting it took a bit of time and we still need to get it in the right order.
So as soon as I got a minute I started to import all the images I had collected into premiere so that they are all ready to be edited and used for our documentary.

Now I wanted to get the water flowing by using some archive material so I decided to use the diagram image of Glaucoma. I thought it would be clever to use it as a graphic to show up in the top corner of the optician interview when he says something about Glaucoma. But I didn't want in to just appear I wanted if to fade in then out. So I put the diagram above the interview then look at the video effect and opened up the opacity settings and then I made the bottom timeline of the image to be at 0.0% so it was invisible and then I wanted the opacity to be at 100.0% opacity the quarter of the way. Furthermore wanted it to be full opacity for a short time then made the opacity go down to 0.0% at the end of the images timeline. That makes the image look like in fades in and out of the interview and makes it look like a clever graphic being used.

So since I stayed longer to edit more of the documentary I managed to cut some more out the Sue Jones interview and got rid of footage that we don't need for the documentary. More needs to be done but almost near completion.

Friday 19th November 2010

Here first of all since we are getting all the footage in order, we had to get rid of certain footage that we didn't have to use because we were going over the five minute limit. So we had to make a lot of sacrafices when editing our filming work.
The image above shows the Specsavers Advert that we are using as our archive footage, we a coinciding this ad with the elderly people and there weakening eye sight as the years go by.
Then we added more archive material, the pictures are of florence to show where the apparent inventor of the glasses since there are no images or paintings of him. But instead of just having the image stay there and stand still, we decided to make the composition of the images move around which gives the illusion as if a camera is moving and recording the image. To do this we had to go on the effect controls and first increase the scale to be bigger that the widescreen frame. Once that was done we had to work with the position of the image and plot diamond markers of the different positions we want the image to move. Plus with another image we had to zoom out from an xtreme close up of the image so that you could see the full image clearly. So we had to increase the scale to overlap the widescreen frame and then use the diamond markers again for the scale of the image on the timeline. Also made an image look like a paning shot with position on the effect controls an use the timeline to make the image move from one side to the other.

Monday 22nd November 2010

We have definately been concentrating on getting our doucmuentary in the right running order, we found out getting everything in order while we cut the footage is a lot quicker than cut every bit of footage then putting it together. Reason being is that we get to see how much time we a taking with certain interviews and cutaways in which helps us to make little sacrafices on what footage we need to get rid of so we can get everything in the 5 minute timeline.
In the timeline we were up to our interview with our laser eye patient, we cut that and put that in its order, then we needed some narration time to give some little facts about laser eye surgery, so we need some more archive cutaways to enforce what is being said. So I went onto OPTICAL EXPRESS website on laser eye surgery, then used the "snipping tool" that turned the site into an image for me. After that I import the image into adobe premiere and put it in the timeline and gave it a moving effect so that you could see the sight.

Tuesday 23rd November 2010

Now that we had most of the footage in the order we took the time to put up the titles for the interviewees to introduce them to the viewers. To do this we had to be on premiere and click on 'title' and then click 'default still'. Then a box pops up and that where you start to create your text by clciking the text tool. Once we done that we had to decide on the font and the colour of the titles. Right know I ust left it white and left any font until I could have all the group together to have a discussion about the style of the titles.

Since I wanted some kind of fancy graphics to be used, I wanted to make certain titles from sites to spin in over another image, so superimposition so that it would make the documentary more fun to watch. Plus I saw it when looking at a documentary with superimposition used when I was looking at the codes and conventions. So I got these lets say qoutes from the optical express website about the success and that on laser eye surgery. Used the snipping tool to turn them into images and then imported them into premiere. To make them spin into the widescreen frame I had to set a number of effects on the images. I first of all had to make the bigger, so I increased the scale for all of them. Then I would pull all of them out of the widescreen frame, and then set the diamond marker on those positions on the timeline so that they wouldn't just appear in the frame. Then I would go further down the timeline and pull the quotes into the position I wanted them on top of the other image and set the marker again. Then to make the effects more complicated I made them spin in to the screen. To do that i had to mess with the rotation of the qoutes on the timeline and set markers again. I would make some to full 360 degree turns and have some of them spin and stay on an angle to make them cover the frame and to make it look more fun instead of ordered.
Once I got those spin effects done I quickly went back to the interview introduction title of the optician just to quickly make the title dissolve into his interview frame so it fits in with the codes and conventions of a documentary.

Now we where up to getting the blind/guide dogs section finished in the documnetary we just had to add cutaways above the interview and get some archive material in to help inforce to narrative facts that will be given by the narrator. The Image I used for archive material is a photo of the first unit of blind dogs to be trained in britain to help blind soldiers. Since the image was to big for the frame I decided to give it a motion of it zooming out to see the most of the image of the men with the guide dogs.

So now I decided to put music on our documentary, we needed a song that could relate to sight. Also wanted it to be chilled out and a relaxing song. So we chose Leona Lewis - I See You Avatar Theme Song. So Put this as the opeining music and the background music. But this was either gonna be a temporary song to be used who we were gonna use it we are not sure yet.

Here we have the relvant cutaways for our interview with the registered blind woman Sue. The cutaways are of her and her guide dog because she gave us some information about guide dogs and the funding behind it. So we got the best cutaways of her dog and a german sherpard cross breed dog to put over the interview to emphasize what is being said.
Snipping tool used again so I could get an image of the Guide Dogs website to be used as archive material again, plus we wanted it to be in the documentary to inform viewers that there are websites for guide dogs so that they can take a look and see if they want to help fund them.
Then I imported the site into premiere then put it over the Sue Jones Interview at the point where she talks about guide dogs are only funded by public donations, then had the site go in a motion moving its position until in zoom into the part where it says on the website "How you can help" to emphasize what Sue is saying.
Me staying extra hours on documentary :p

Wednesday 24th November 2010

As you can see on the timeline on the screen shot above the documentary is amost complete we just have to put in our last interview of Daniel Boardman who is our contact lens user. So we got the best answers that we wanted to use in the documentary and we had to make sure it was relevant and useful information because we had to make sure we don't go over the time limit of five minutes.
Now we went back to the introduction titles for the interviewees, and agreed on these settings for the title. Font to be "Rod" and the size to be "43" and the text colour to be "White". Then we wanted the text ti have a background so we made a square from the tools and colour it "Purple" and sent it behind the text and changed the backgrounds opacity so you could see the interview set. We thought this worked really well.
Back to the contact user interview, we have chosen what footage of the interview we are using and since we were advised to make the opticians interview less boring by putting another interview near his so we put Daniels interview first since he puts up the arguement against glasses or contact lens.
Since we found out we had quite a bit more time to fill, we were able to put back Eileens interview, but we decided to use the part were she talks about when she gets glaucoma and stick that near the end of the opticians interview and before the specsavers advert.
This is a sigh of some releif because we have finally got the documentary footage in the order we want it to run and we have been given the clear that its fine. So no we can finish the titles and tweek parts of the doc to make it better. Plus need to get the narration done and then it will be ready to be exported.
This is getting the final introduction text complete and also checking the other titles to see if they are not too quick or to long. We have also been advised to make a opening title better so we will be getting on to that quickly.
Since we had a few seconds left at the end we filled it in so the narrator can have his final say and conclude the documentary. The narration still needs to be done.

Monday 29th November 2010

Today we looked over our documentary and checked in and see if it needed any slight changes while we worked on the narration script.

Tuesday 30th November 2010

We were advised to make are title better so we seperated the text to "Can you See" then "Me Now" so that we could mess with the position, size and angle of the titles so that they come from the eyes and come together in the centre of the screen into a colourful background. We had many problems withh this because messing with the effects do much we got confused on the timing of the text and when adding the background that made things worse because it stopped one of the titles effect from working. Then we had to start again and second time around we took it easy and made sure all the settings were right and that layers for the footage were in the right video frame timelines.

Wednesday 1st December 2010

Finally we got our narration done and now we could now import and edit the narration into our documentary. So before we put the narration in we had to listen to it first and cut the right parts of the narration so that we could put the narration straight into the right places of the documentary. Once they were in the order we watched it over and adjusted the volume and then made sure we rendered all the videos. Then it was finally complete.

Friday 3rd December 2010

So since our documentary is done we just had to add at the beginninga blackvideo and plain white text of our groups names and candidate numbers for the examiner to see.
Then we got told to help improve our grade which was to make sure that we have instrumental music so that the lyrics of the songs don't clash with the interview footage. After that was quickly done we finally finished our documentary.
